Scream SLO

FREQUENTLY
ASKED QUESTIONS.

Answers about signing up, screaming, voice safety, weather, kids, recording, and starting a chapter.

No, absolutely not. RSVPing is optional. You’re welcome to sign up so we know you’re coming, but you don’t need a reservation to join us.

No, it is not. Scream SLO is an experience of collective release. It isn’t therapy or a replacement for professional mental health or medical care.

That’s completely fine. You can listen, breathe, make a quieter sound, or simply be there. There is no pressure to perform and no spotlight on anyone.

Wear whatever you’re comfortable being outside in. Depending on the location and weather, layers, comfortable shoes, water, and sun protection can be useful.

Everyone can feel a little nervous the first time they do something unfamiliar. People come solo, as couples, with a friend, or in groups. You don’t need to know anyone before you arrive.

Strong feelings can be part of all kinds of human experiences. There’s room to step away, take a breath, sit quietly, or leave whenever you want. Scream SLO is a supportive community space, but it isn’t therapy or crisis care.

Absolutely. Bring a friend, bring a few, or come by yourself. Whatever makes you most comfortable. This is meant to be a welcoming, judgment-free space.

We’ll warm up first with breathing, humming, and lower sounds before getting louder. The goal is release, not strain. You control your own volume, and you can stop or dial it back at any time.

Well, you might. That’s part of doing something unfamiliar. You can be loud, quiet, awkward, laughing, crying, or wondering what on earth you’re doing. Nobody is grading your scream.

There isn’t a correct way to do this. A scream can be loud, quiet, raw, strange, short, long, or somewhere in between. You choose what feels right for you.

We’re outside, so weather matters. If conditions make a gathering unsafe or genuinely miserable, we’ll postpone or cancel and share the update through our website and email list.

Yes, with a parent or responsible adult. Parents and caregivers should decide whether the experience, setting, and noise level are appropriate for their child.

Plan on roughly 90 minutes from beginning to end. The structured part may be shorter, and there’s usually time to arrive, settle in, and stick around afterward if you’d like.

We may occasionally photograph or record parts of a gathering, but not without your consent. You should always be able to participate without being photographed or recorded.

That’s fine too. There is no requirement to participate loudly. You can observe, take a breath, see what it’s like, and decide for yourself.

Contact us. Tell us where you are and that you’re interested in helping coordinate a gathering, and we’ll take it from there.

No. Scream SLO gatherings are free to attend. We may sell Scream SLO merchandise to help cover the incidental costs of keeping the gatherings and organization going, but buying anything is completely optional.

A clear reminder: Scream SLO is a community wellness gathering, not a substitute for therapy, medical care, or mental health treatment. If you are in crisis or need support beyond what a group scream can offer, please reach out to a licensed professional.
